About National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and NSS cell, Higher and technical education, Govt. of Maharashtra. It provides opportunity to the students to take part in community service activities & programs. The aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience and development of personality of students through Social service. NSS was formally launched on 24th September 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi ( Mahatma Gandhiji) Therefore, 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities.

  The objectives of NSS are to: •    Understand the community in which they work  •    To run social awareness programs such as social integrity and social co-operation. •    Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving          process.  •    Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility; •    Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community           problems.  •    Develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities; •    Gain skills in mobilizing community participation;  •    Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude; •   To arrange awareness programme for Eradication of superstitions develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and practise national integration and social harmony  

Activities of NSS

  Work done by NSS in additional to academic work during the lockdown in 2019  
  • More than two hundred nesting facility for watering the birds.
  • More than 150 Police uncles on Covid duty are provided with daily drinking water.
  • Eighty students registered as Covid volunteers on Covid-19 site of Savitribai Phule Pune University.
  • All the 100 students participated in the survey conducted by the NSS department of SPPU.
  • All the 100 students participated in the mask masking and donate sanitizer
